Many people take years to ‘find themselves’ and figure out what makes them tick. We at Riot are passionate about developing each facet of our students lives during their time here with us. We want to assist our students in becoming well rounded and well balanced individuals. When they leave us, they will have a clearer picture of who they are, how they have been uniquely created and gifted, and where to focus their efforts going forward. To assist them in achieving this goal, we have incorporated the following tools into our personal development program:

LIFE SKILLS

In addition to the tools mentioned above, all our students will have regular life skills lectures where they will cover a host of practical and helpful topics that will set them up for life in the future. The topics covered are too numerous to mention but include some of the following:

  • How to set a budget
  • How to change a car tyre
  • The effects of compound interest and debt
  • How to conduct yourself in an interview
  • How to create a CV
  • Personal Mentorship
  • Each student will choose a mentor that they have formed a relationship with who will assist in guiding them and supporting them throughout the year. These mentors will be screened to ensure that they are a correct and helpful fit for each student.

BUSINESS BY DESIGN

The Riot Business Programme is a first of its kind and has been set up to equip students with the necessary skills needed to start, manage and grow a privately owned business. In an economic environment such as ours in South Africa, starting and/or owning a business, is often the only opportunity many of us will have to create a sustainable and stable financial future. We intend to give our students the support and advice they need to jump-start them along on this path.

  • Business Leadership

Introduces and develops skills necessary for effective leadership. Topics include key traits of strong leaders, motivation of others, coaching skills, negotiation, conflict resolution, team management, and diversity and change management.

  • Entrepreneurship and Business Management

Introduces the fundamentals of small business startup and growth. Topics include development of a business concept, strategic planning, marketing, financing, and an overview of international business. Examines important principles for businesses of any size.

  • Project Management

Examines how to manage projects by planning, prioritizing, scheduling, budgeting and monitoring the project. Emphasizes common tools and methods used by project managers to complete projects on time and in budget.

WORK EXPERIENCE

What better way to establish the career path you would like to follow, than completing four weeks of work experience in up to four different vocations. We at Riot are committed to assisting our students to find the vocational path that best suits them. So take your pick of the numerous opportunities below and enjoy an experience that will give you an in depth look into the field you are considering. The work experience will be divided into four segments of one week each. Two of these will be completed in the second quarter and the remaining two in the third and fourth quarter. Students are able to dedicate all four weeks to one vocation should they wish to, or can experience four different jobs in four different areas.

STRENGTH FINDER AND PERSONALITY TEST

Cliftons Strenghtsfinder
The Clifton StrengthsFinder measures the presence of 34 talent themes or strengths. Talents are people’s naturally recurring patterns of thought, feeling, or behaviour that can be productively applied. The more dominant a theme is in a person, the greater the theme’s impact on that person’s behaviour and performance. This tool focusses on an individual’s strengths rather than their weaknesses and encourages them to grow these strengths even further.

Myers Briggs
One of the most popular personality profiling tools used in the world today. Myers Briggs assists students in seeing on paper, who they are and how they have been created. It is an essential tool in helping them understand both themselves as well as people around them.
