Karen and I ran a youth conference for leaders many years ago. On the opening night, our guest speaker hadn’t arrived so I turned to Greg Haswell to find out what he had prepared, and his message was, “There’s a giant of a God in you dreaming big dreams for you”. Well, that night turned out to be a great night listening to one of the most memorable preaches. I can’t quite remember the details, but the title still rings loudly over my mind all these years later.
God has plans for us, God has belief in us and all of that is expressed in His love towards us.
Ephesians 1:5 (AMP) “For He foreordained us (destined us, planned in love for us) to be adopted (revealed) as His own children through Jesus Christ, in accordance with the purpose of His will [because it pleased Him and was His kind intent].”
The idea is simple: God didn’t just save us; He wanted to put His identity on us. This particular thought has been such a revelation to me over the last little while. We not only get to become sons of God but we get to take His name, with all the inheritance that that entails.
So we carry His name as Ephesians 3:14-15 says: “For this reason, I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named.” Because we carry His name, His identity, we have a responsibility to confer the greatness of God upon others. Let me explain.
When you speak over people with encouragement, you represent the Father and His identity to them, and you get to draw them into God’s plan by conferring Godly identity upon what is broken in this world. Our words have power – as Proverbs 18:21 says: “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.”
Imagine that everyone you meet has an internal switch that is mostly in the off ‘position’. You have received this amazing “Holy Spirit activation” which allows you to speak over others. When you encourage someone you potentially unlock (switch on) the genius that heaven has created in them. By speaking over them you release something… the possibility of redeeming something which is at that point still unredeemed -gifts, talents, the call of God, all of which is locked up in each human life.
People are searching for identity and this search often makes them strive to become someone else. When the gospel touches our lives, it gives us identity; we become the best version of ourselves – fully alive, with the potential to walk into ALL God has planned over us, despite our past.
This revelation is a bit like ‘grace’ I suppose, it has to sink in. Imagine yourself as someone who builds (creates) with your words instead of breaking down or even staying silent. When we do this we really become agents of a new way in this world. As people hunger for identity, we get to put our Father’s identity upon them, upon our children, upon our workmates, by speaking words that build. So this is our task: let God’s greatness speak from your life and unlock the life of God within others. This is the way we bless those around us.
“The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace”. “So they will put my name on the Israelites, and I will bless them.” Numbers 6:24-27
